ART ENGAGEMENT AROUND THE SGS CAMPUS
The SGS Visual Arts area of the school was always a vibrant place, with students cover our walls in their creativity. In 2012, the Serangoon Community Centre invited SGS’s Art Department to paint a mural along their entrance walk celebrating community. And then every year at Arts Night, the art department hosts an Art Contest, displaying works during the night for attendees to vote. SGS was also host to many visiting school groups and the art department enjoyed showing our guests some innovative ways to explore their creativity.
VALUE INSPIRED PROGRAM
In 2012, SGS NT Art students were selected from among hundreds of Singaporean local school groups to participate in the VIP program, creating a collaborative art display at the Esplanade. The 14 students worked with Singaporean batik artist to create their own representations of what truth means to them, through perceptions of identity and discourses of racial harmony. They designed their definitions and painted them with batik in to create mini claddings. (Claddings are the spikes that are on the roof of the esplanade, to represent durians.) The students work was displayed as part of the SYF festival walk.
SINGAPORE YOUTH FESTIVAL
2011 SGS student was awarded SYF Bronze and invited to the SYF Celebration of Art Excellence. In 2012, 3 SGS students were selected as Finalists for SYF Art Excellence being included in the Grand Art Exhibition at LaSalle Art College (2013).
