IB DP VISUAL ARTS

ISE IB DP VA GALLERY 2014: POETIC TRANSFORMATIONS

Since ISE was under construction and Gallery Space was limited, for our IB graduates in 2014, we created a book showcasing their super creative works.  We distributed the book to these hardworking students at graduation so they could forever have a memento of their artistic endeavours at ISE

ISE IB DP VA GALLERY 2015: PERSPECTIVES

Our 2015 IB DP class successfully completed their IB and ISE submissions with a stunning gallery in ISE’s new Fine Arts Centre.
In our IB class, we experimented with a variety of mediums and ideas – painting, sculpture, installation, video, murals, paper cut… basically whatever the students could think of!   In order to develop our ideas and find more inspiration – we also took as many trips as we could into Bangkok and around Pattaya

COMMUNITY COLLABORATIONS

EASTERN SEABOARD 1st ANNUAL GRADUATE SHOW 2015

I founded and organized the 1st Annual Joint Eastern Seaboard Art Group, using ISE's new Art Gallery host the first Joint IB DP Art Gallery featuring selected works from international schools in the area: St Andrew's, Regent's Pattaya and ISE.

LoWER AND MIDDLE SCHOOL ART

At ISE, I designed the Lower and Middle School courses to explore student's creativity, introduce students to VA concepts, support and prepare students for the IB DP programme.  During their LS and MS Art courses, students were able to experiment with many different mediums (illustration, painting, photography, installation, sculpture, etc), develop critical thinking skills… and most importantly to have fun!

ISE students work is regularly featured in EARCO's Journal, such as MS art student Jen Ko's collage in 2014.

EXAMPLES OF SOME MS ART PROJECTS

MOVING ARTS STUDIES

Our HS Moving Arts class provided a joint introduction to both IB DP VA and DP Film.  We looked at many different aspects from studying some of the classics (early made films, great blockbusters), various genres, technical skills (film shots, editing) as well as storyboarding, branding… and whatever else we thought would be useful to the film process.
One of the most fun units, was our horror craft.  Students were challenged to learn how to create movie makeup effects that would shock and scare us. Then they had to teach the class how to create the same effect.  So gross… but so fun!

HIGHLIGHTING SKETCHBOOKS

For the pre-IB years, I introduced a new method of sketching, I liked to call ‘Educated Sketches’.  Students were encouraged to research artists, choose one of their artist’s work, analyse it and then re-create it – either as close to the original as possible… or to slightly and uniquely change it to reflect their own interpretation.  Some of the results from my art students amazed me!!

LEARNING JOURNEYS

Because ISE was located in between Pattaya and Bangkok in the middle of a golf course, we were hard pressed to find art galleries close by for day trips. I developed learning trips and artist workshops for my art students to engage with local culture and local artisans as well as more contemporary gallery trips. Having a small class, gave us an advantage transportation wise – as we just needed a van – and we were off and running!  We were  able to connect with other international schools in the area to visit their IB art shows.  Local artisan Khun Bui visited ISE and gave a workshop for our LS VA students on realistic portraiture. And our learning journeys to Bangkok, with visits to MOCA, NIST, Bangkok Patana IS and Jim Thomson's House were always inspiring.

MRISA ARTS EXCHANGE

Mekong Delta Region International School Association (MRISA) is a community of 6 schools from Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam and Laos that meet and collaborate for sports, leadership and arts events during the school year.

CX HYBRID at ISE, 2014

In 2014, the Arts Exchange was hosted by ISE.  The theme was ‘HYBRID’. I was responsible for organizing 8 different Art Workshops, sourcing materials, managing space and instructing workshops.
Over a 3-day weekend over 100 students visited ISE and participated in Art, Music and Drama Workshops.  For Art, there were 8 different 8 workshops, culminating in a final Art Gallery. (Some) Pictures of the Art Workshops are below. (Hard to take photos when we were so busy having fun!!

AX AT SSIS, 2015

In 2015, we changed our name and focus from CX (cultural exchange) to AX (ARTS exchange). ISE Arts teachers travelled and communicated with Arts teachers at South Saigon International School (SSIS) throughout the year to plan and then travelled with our Arts Students to take part in the annual Arts Exchange with Art students from the 8 MRISA schools.  Some of the highlights were Thai Artist Popkapi painting workshops, Waterlily Mixed Media, Text Portrait.
Due to building expansion, the SSIS campus had a floor of empty classrooms, that were just about to renovated.  Our Arts X took advantage and created a group collaborative interactive installation art using only recycled materials.  So messy but so fun!
I had so much fun, I didn’t remember to take photos!  Below is only a small sample of the amazing art workshops and work the students did.  The whole weekend was a stunning collaboration of Art, Music and Drama.  My mind blown. (Proud teacher)
